Winter is the heart of Crystal River manatee season.
Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge defines manatee season as November 15 through March 31. Cooler weather can concentrate manatees near warm spring water, making winter the strongest season for established tours and above-water viewing.
Expect cool boat rides and variable conditions. Book permitted operators early, pack warm layers, and keep more than one morning available when manatees are the main reason for the trip.

April through October
Warmer months favor paddling, boating, and summer scalloping.
Paddle craft are generally permitted inside Three Sisters Springs from April 1 through November 14, subject to current management and conditions. Warm-season visitors should plan early starts, sun protection, drinking water, and an alternate plan for thunderstorms.
Citrus County scallop season is date-specific and published by FWC. For 2026, the season runs July 1 through September 24. Future trips must use the current year’s official dates and limits.
